Every language has a way to describe ugly people, but I think the Chinese language probably has one of the meanest ways to say “Ugly”.  The most common Chinese word used to describe ugly is the character combination “Nan Kan”, with a direct translation of “Difficult to look at”.  Calling someone “ugly” is bad, but calling someone so ugly that people cannot even stand to look at you is taking ugliness to a whole different level.  If you think that was bad, Chinese people use the word “Ko long”, the literal word for “dinosaur”, to describe a woman they think is ugly.  Now if you ever hear someone say it is too mean to call another person “ugly” in English, at least you know its not as bad as calling someone “Too ugly to look at” or a “dinosaur” in Chinese, which is a whole lot meaner than the English word for “ugly”.

难看-nán kàn-Ugly, difficulty to look at (Adj)

Literal Translation-Difficult see

她总是很难看。

Tā zǒngshì hěn nánkàn。

She was always the ugly sister.

丑八怪-chǒu bā guài-Extrememly ugly, disfigured

Literal Translation-Ugly eight monster

他为什么总是爱上丑八怪？

tā wèishénme zǒngshì àishàng chǒubāguài？

Why does he always fall for ugly girls?

丑陋-chǒu lòu-Ugly (Adj)

那是个丑陋的婴儿！

nà shì gè chǒulòu de yīngér！

That is one ugly baby!

恶心-ě xīn-Disgusting, makes you sick (Adj)

Literal Translation-Evil heart

nàgè nǚrén hěn chǒu，ràng wǒ ěxīn。

That woman is so ugly that it makes me sick.

恐龙-kǒng long-Ugly woman (Noun)

Literal Translation-Dinosaur

你怎么会喜欢她？她是个恐龙！

nǐ zěnmehuì xǐhuān tā？tā shì gè kǒnglóng！

How could you like her? She is so ugly!

青蛙-qīng wā-Ugly guy (Noun)

Literal Translation-Frog

找老婆对他来说应该很难，因为他是个青蛙。

zhǎo lǎopó duì tā lái shuō yīnggāi hěn nán，yīnwèi tā shì gè qīngwā。

It will be very difficult for him to find a wife because he is so ugly.

毁容-huǐ róng-Disfigured face (Verb)

Literal Translation-Destroy face

我给了那个乞丐一点钱，因为他的脸毁容了。

wǒ gěi le nàgè qǐgài yìdiǎn qián，yīnwèi tā de liǎn huǐróng le。

I gave that beggar money because he had a disfigured face.

惨不忍睹-cǎn bù rěn dǔ-Too horrible to look at (Adj)

她的脸太丑了，真是惨不忍睹。

tā de liǎn tài chǒu le，zhēn shì cǎnbùrěndǔ。

Her face was so ugly that it was just too horrible to look at.

长得很有创意-zhǎng de hěn yǒu chuàng yì-Euphemism for ugly face, bad complextion (Adj)

Literal Translation-Grow very creative

他长得很有创意，全是痤疮和面疱。

tā zhǎng de hěn yǒu chuàngyì，quán shì cuóchuāng hé miànpào。

His face was ugly because of all the pimples and acne.

坑坑洼洼-kēng kēng wā wā-Pizza face, bad complexion (Adj)

Literal Translation-hole hole hollow hollow

因为不洗脸，他的脸上坑坑洼洼。

yīnwèi bù xǐliǎn，tā de liǎnshàng kēngkēngwāwā。

He has a bad complexion from not washing his face.

麻子脸-má zi liǎn-Has bad appearance (Noun)

Literal Translation-Pimple face

他有一张麻子脸。

tā yǒu yì zhāng ěxīn de máziliǎn。

He has a disgusting face.

歪瓜劣枣-wāi guā liè zǎo-A group of unattractive men (Noun)

Literal Translation-Slanting melon bad dates

当我们离开酒吧的时候，进来了一群歪瓜裂枣。

dāng wǒmén líkāi jiǔbā de shíhòu，jìnlái le yìqún wāiguālièzǎo。

A bunch of ugly guys came in right before we left the bar.

王八看绿豆，看对眼了-wáng bā kàn lǜ dòu，kàn duì yǎn le-Ugly people who fall in love with each other

Literal Translation-King eight look green beans, look right eyes

杰克和玛丽是王八看绿豆，看对眼了。

jiékè hé mǎlì shì wángbā kàn lǜdòu，kànduìyǎn le。

Jack and Marry fell in love with each other.
